General Stanislav Galic’s defence counsels turned to the Secretariat in order to ask the Government of Republika Srpska to provide guarantee for the temporary release of their client, who as a former commander of the Sarajevo-Romanija corps, was indicted by the ICTY.

The Secretariat reviewed and completed the materials and referred them to the Government of Republika Srpska, which, at its twenty-third session, granted this request.

The Secretariat referred the Government’s decision on providing the guarantee for Stanislav Galic’s temporary release to the defence counsels and the Office 2 of the BiH Presidency for cooperation with the ICTY.

5 December 2003 general Stanislav Galic was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.  He lodged the appeal 18 December 2003 and the appellate proceedings are to commence at the beginning of the next year.

In legal terms, the detention is a measure which ensures the presence of the accused during the trial and as such, according to the international conventions, shall be over in due time.
